MAY 2013

Artists, Blue Crabs & Historic Homes in May Spotlight

Butts & Clucks,

Tupelo Honey,

Golf & Fishing

Diversity – that’s the best way to describe the festivals and special events calendar for May on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Ranging from a tour of historic Apalachicola homes to the 37th Blue Crab Festival in Panacea. From  the 23rd Tupelo Honey Festival in the North Gulf County community of Wewahitchka to the Plein Air Paintout that takes the spotlight for some 10 days along the entire Forgotten Coast.

We have children’s fishing clinics and a “Butts & Clucks” Celebration (and auction) at the Riverfront Park on the shores of the Apalachicola River. And how about a “Civil War Living History” weekend in Apalach (read all about it in the Apalachicola Maritime Museum column (A-13). The Sharks & Chablis gathering is in Panacea on Sunday May 19 and we celebrate the life of the late Anne Rudloe (read Cynthia Paulson’s Wakulla Green column on A-8).

But that’s not all folks. We have a “Golf Gone Wild” tournament that will help the Florida Wildlife Mammal Association (FWMA) care for orphaned and injured critters and a fishing tournament for the big boys.

The most prominent & dominant of the events is the May2-12 PLEIN AIR PAINTOUT which is staged all along the Forgotten Coast. The 10-day open air painting event features national artists creating memories of the Forgotten Coast on canvas.   Artists will be painting on the beach, across the marsh, beside the lakes and throughout the streets of waterfront towns from Mexico Beach, Windmark, Port St.  Joe, Cape San Blas, Apalachicola, Eastpoint, St. George Island, Carrabelle and inland at Wewahitchka.  Experience beauty through the eyes of America's finest plein air artists! This event is so extensive and comprehensive that we have devoted an entire page (A-3) to previewing the event.

No matter your favorite things to see or do there is surely an April Forgotten Coast festival or special event that you will find entertaining.

If you like to fish - we’ve got fishing tournaments. Are you into antique & classic boats and motors?   Apalachicola has just such a festival. Would you like to learn how the “backwoods” folks “grunt” for their favorite fish bait? Then you need to be in Sopchoppy for the annual worm grunting festival and the world famous worm grunters ball. Which introduce “Wild About Wakulla” week, which culminates with the Wakulla Wildlife Festival at magnificent Wakulla Springs State Park.

Do you appreciate the beauty of dozens of small watercraft racing across the horizon? Then you won’t want to miss the annual Stephen Smith Memorial Regatta at Shell Point in Wakulla County. Have you ever attended a “Fishy Fashion Show”? It’s a fashion parade featuring mostly only all natural nautical materials and is one of the featured activities at the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival.

Wealth of March Special Forgotten Coast Events Slated

By Chuck Spicer

As has been the case for more than three decades, the St. George Island Charity Chili Cookoff and Auction on March 2 signals the start of “spring break” season on the Forgotten Coast and a steady stream of more than 150 festivals and special events throughout the year. Many sponsored, in part, by the respective tourist development councils in each county. That’s your “bed tax” dollars put to work to keep you coming back for more.

Many of the events are held in order to raise monies for a good cause while 99% are run by volunteers. So be patient with them. Here’s an overview of what’s on the agenda.

As previously noted the 32nd ANNUAL ST. GEORGE ISLAND CHARITY CHILI COOKOFF & AUCTION to benefit the SGI Volunteer Fire Department & First Responders will be staged March 2. Contestants will compete in the largest regional chili cookoff in the nation and vie for a spot in the National Chili Cookoff.  On Friday (March 1), the Auction Art Preview is from 2:00 in the afternoon to 7:00 in the evening at the island's firehouse (324 E. Pine Ave.).  For a $5 donation, you may preview (and bid on) many of the precious & art items that will available at the next day's auction.

Saturday activities include the 5K Red Pepper Run (8:00 AM); Crock Pot Judging (10-11:00); the Fabulous Auction, featuring Harry Arnold & Chuck Spicer at the gavel beginning at 11:00; booth showmanship judging (11:30 - 12:15); Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce judging (starting at 12:15), taste awards (3:30). Held in the center of the island, there is a $5 entry fee. Yes, you can get libations to help cool off the palate. Call 850-653-6735 or go to  www.sgiChiliCookOff.com

The Woodville Natural Bridge Civil War Reenactment will be staged March 2-3 with the real “action” taking place on Sunday.  Be sure to wear reliable walking shoes; bring a camera and have your child or grandchild in tow as Woodville fills with Civil War buffs enjoying the historic battle of 1865 that is fought all over again. We won’t tell you in advance who wins but may we humbly suggest you don’t wear blue. Encampments are open to the public on Saturday and the actual battle takes place on Sunday. Call 850 922-6007 for details.

Mexico Beach, which is located in Bay County but feels more akin to its rural neighbors this side of Tyndall Air Force Base, loves its “Snowbirds” and shows its appreciation with a luncheon each year. This year (March 7) it will again be at the El Governor and starts around 11:00 a.m. Food and drinks are complimentary, and they’ll also have great door prizes and live entertainment. We presume you know that a “Snowbird” is a visitor who becomes a “resident” for the winter months.

The Dixie Theatre features  MAHARAJAH FLAMENCO on March 8 (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM (ET)). Back for their 2nd season at the Dixie, these musicians are truly amazing! High-energy, daring, soulful world music. Argentine tango, Brazilian samba, Latin/Caribbean rhythm…a dynamic expression of Flamenco Nuevo.

On the March 8-9 weekend  “Shells & Tales” are featured in the Port St. Joe area. Three professional storytellers will hold a storytelling workshop at the Gulf Coast State College Gulf/Franklin Center on March 8th and an evening storytelling event with wine and cheese reception at the St. Joseph Bay Golf Club on March 9th. For more information on this event contact Dr. Pat Hardman at 850-229-7799.

                                      ALL MILITARY PERSONNEL HONORED

March 8-9 are also the dates of the traditional CAMP GORDON JOHNSTON REUNION DAYS in Carrabelle. Held the 2nd weekend in March every year, the festivities begin Thursday, March 7th, with an open house as veterans check in to their accommodations. On Friday, the 8th, veterans and their families register at the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at the Carrabelle City Complex.  Free finger foods and drinks are provided. Friday evening American Legion Post 82, Camp Gordon Johnston hosts a free southern seafood buffet for members and vets.  At that time current active duty troops are most welcome.  They and WWII veterans are served first.  Live music is provided.

Saturday the 9th, breakfast is served at the Masonic Lodge in Carrabelle.  Later (10:45 am) a parade is held on Hwy 98 featuring vintage WWII vehicles and tanks as well as modern military vehicles.  There will be marching bands, civic groups, and a possible re-enactment of the Normandy beach landing at old Carrabelle Beach, 1/8 mile west of Carrabelle on Hwy 98.Saturday evening features a dinner and dance at the Municipal Complex auditorium.  Prizes and awards are given.  The public is cordially welcome at all events during Camp Gordon Johnston Days.  Ticket prices for the dinner/dance and breakfast are posted on line.  Please check their web page at: www.campgordonjohnston.com for updates to this great event.

We again note that not only are veterans from Camp Gordon Johnston (a Franklin County “secret” amphibious training base of the early 40’s) honored but all veterans and current military personnel are also honored.

On March 9 WISH I WAS IN DIXIE will be staged at the Dixie Theatre (8-10 PM) in Apalachicola. This is a surprise musical treat…could be country, could be something else. Whatever it is, it'll be such a delight and leave you wanting more and more… Also SECOND SATURDAY in Apalachicola will be held at Riverfront Park.

We will start having longer daylight hours starting March 10 as DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BEGINS.

The SARAH MAC BAND is center stage March 15 (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM (ET)) at the Dixie Theatre .The Dixie House Band is back for their 4th season and nobody does it better…exceptional vocals and strong, smart lyrics bring a joyous blend of blues, rock, jazz and soul. Catch 'em before they hit it big -‘cause they're gonna.

The 12th Annual Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department Charity Rib Cookoff is set for Saturday March 16th at the fire house in Eastpoint. The event is located at the corner of 6th St and CC Land Rd one block north of US Hwy 98. This year’s event promises to be the biggest ever with competitors cooking more ribs than ever before. They range from the (newest) 3rd Annual Oyster Cookoff in Apalachicola on January 19 to the (oldest) 50th Annual Florida Seafood Festival and the Downtown Apalach Oyster Roast in Apalachicola on the first weekend of November . From the Stone Crab Festival in “downtown” St. Marks to the Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival in Panacea.  Hopefully St. George Island will host a Franklin County Oyster Festival in the fall. Also slated for the fall is the always popular multi-day Scallop & Music Festival in Port St. Joe.

On May 4 anyone with transportation in Wakulla County will be at the 37th Blue Crab Festival in Panacea. Come to think of it, surely there will also be some seafood at the 17th Annual Forgotten Coast Chef’s Sampler in Apalach.

Sure, seafood is our greatest culinary attraction but we have other delicious festival food on our plates. On February 23 the annual “Pig Party” (as in Swine Festival) will be staged in Crawfordville and on Feb. 16 the 15thAnnual  Mexico Beach Gumbo Cookoff will draw a large crowd. The St. James/Lanark Volunteer Fire Department also has a gumbo cookoff in November. On March 16 the 12th Annual Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department will host its charity rib cookoff and later in the year they will attempt to raise funds with their annual “Pork-A-Thon.”

The granddaddy of the non-seafood (but delicious) festivals is the 32nd Annual St. George Island Charity Chili Cookoff & Auction on the first weekend in March. This annual rite of spring is the largest International Chili Society sanctioned (ICS) regional event in the nation and has raised a whole lot of much-needed money for the SGI VFD & First Responders.

We are going to have fishing tournaments galore. Ranging from the Big Bend Classic in Carrabelle to a pair of fabulous events staged out of Mexico Beach Marina. One has resulted in an outstanding artificial reef program off the shores of Mexico Beach. C-Quarters Marina on Highway 98 in Carrabelle has a comprehensive series of tournaments during the summer and fall and the biggest beneficiaries are the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Leukemia Foundation (More than $670,000 has been donated ).  St. Joe Marina graciously supports the Wounded Warrior program and there are a series of catfish tourneys.

Even the curtain climbers haven’t been left out. There are also youth fishing clinics/tournaments in Panacea, Port St. Joe and Carrabelle.

Let’s see what else we have. Port St. Joe hosts a SaltAir Farmers Market twice a month and a First Friday Art & Music event. Apalachicola has a designated “Second Saturday” Celebration every month.

Speaking of art, the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Paintout is quite the event that spans a near two-week period and is celebrated in three counties.  We have a pair of home tours. The first on St. George Island (Feb. 9) and the other is the 20th Apalachicola Spring Tour of Homes on May 4.

Love boats? The Apalachicola Antique & Classic Boat Show on Water Street is a must.  And you’ll have tons of fun at the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival.

Sopchoppy may be a really, really small Wakulla County community on High 319 but it truly stands out when it comes to throwing a party. Both the annual Worm Grunting Festival and Independence Day Celebration are a must for those who enjoy fun in the sun.

Into sports? Twice during the year there will be triathlons/duathons at St. Joe Beach and there will be a “sizzler” run on St. George Island and a “Run to the Bay” from Apalach to the island. Plus a run at Wakulla Springs State Spark.

Speaking the “Eighth Wonder of the World” Wakulla Springs will again host the Wakulla Wildlife Festival on April 20. Ochlockonee State Park (on Highway 319 between St. James and Sopchoppy) hosts one of the more unique “all natural” events - the Fifth Annual Stone Age and Primitive Arts Festival” on Feb 22-24.

There will be St. Vincent Island events as well as St. Joseph Buffer Preserve activities. The Apalachicola Maritime Museum will hold so many activities during the year that it is near impossible to list them all. The same goes for the Dixie Theatre in Historic Downtown Apalachicola. During the January thru March “season” Dixie Partington brings dozens and dozens of exceptional cultural happenings to the area. Ranging from ballet to Nashville. From Elvis to Patsy!

The area goes to the dogs (and cats) several times this year thanks to active humane societies. There will be fireworks displays galore and Christmas Celebrations in just about every community. We have an “Art Walk” in Apalach and an Art & Wine Fest in Mexico Beach. The Panhandle Players will perform and there will be a Lighthouse Day in celebration of the four fabulous lights located on the Forgotten Coast.

And the Forgotten Coast certainly doesn’t forget the troops. The Camp Gordon Johnston Reunion Days in March in Carrabelle salutes all of the vets of the past and present.

We will have golf tournaments galore at St. James Bay Golf Resort (Franklin County). Wildwood Golf Resort (Walkulla County) and St. Joseph Bay Country Club (Gulf County). Plus you are welcome to join the locals at the Lanark Village par three course and play “best ball” every other Saturday (starting Dec. 8) at 1 pm.

Let’s see what else is on the agenda…There ‘s the Blast on the Bay Songwriters Festival and an Apalachicola Authors Event. Chip in a “Bull Bash” in Crawfordville and a Monarch Butterfly Festival at St. Marks Preserve.

That’s enough – you get the idea. Kindly refer to our rather comprehensive calendar for an even more extensive list

Let’s now concentrate on January.

From Worm Grunting to Lighthouse Challenge

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Kindly note that many Forgotten Coast events have expanded from one day to two days. Some even longer! Sometimes the reason for expanding is to gain additional funding from a respective “Tourist Development Council.” (your bed tax dollars at work).  In many cases the “main event” is still happening on a single day (usually a Saturday) and “lighter” fare is offered the second day. With close to 200 special events on the Forgotten Coast we urge you to “be aware” as you read our previews and plan accordingly.)

Variety is certainly the spice of life and the April Forgotten Coast Festival & Special Events Calendar features a delightful blend of activities for all palates. Ranging from worm grunting in Sopchoppy to an antique and classic boat show along the Apalachicola waterfront. From a colorful regatta for a great cause at Shell Point to “Pirates of the Carrabellean” roaming the streets of Carrabelle for two days.  Even a “Wildlife Festival” at world famous Wakulla Springs; power lifting on St. George Island; a triathlon and Duathon on St. Joe Beach; and an area-wide “Lighthouse Challenge.” And some fishing!

Before I forget, let’s start off by telling you what event will not be held this year. The Rock By The Sea music folks have moved their show from St. George Island to Panama City Beach.

There will be at least five events during Easter (April 8) weekend starting off with the First Friday Fine Art & Music Series at the Thirsty Goat in Port St. Joe on April 6. On the same evening there will be a sunset/full moon climb of the St. George Island Lighthouse from 7:30pm to 9 pm for a small fee.

On Saturday April 7 the Junior Service League will again sponsor its annual “Easter Egg Hunt” for kids of all ages at the 8th Street Park in Port St. Joe. We understand that “Harvey” will be making an appearance.

On the same day Port St. Joe’s “Salt Air Farmers Market” will be opening for the first time in 2012. Open the first and third Saturdays of the month thru November, the farmers market features all kinds of goodies ranging from seasonal produce to unique crafts. It is held at City Commons Park (downtown) from 9am to 1 pm. You can read all about it in a special Gulf County Chamber Column in this issue. Rounding out April 7 activities is a 5k “Rabbit Run/Walk on Cape San Blas.” Special Easter Sunday services will be held throughout the area.

The “Friends” of St. Vincent Preserve, a very special barrier island off the Franklin County coast, hold “wagon tours” of the island (April 11) but space is limited and you must make advance reservations by visiting their website or their visitor center in Apalachicola. If you aren’t into “organized” activities go to the public boat ramp at Indian Pass and take the “shuttle” to the island. Bring a bathing suit, picnic lunch and camera.

We don’t have a lot of details but apparently (according to the Gulf County TDC calendar) there is a “Tagged Trout & Redfish Tournament” on St. Joseph Bay on April 13 & 14.

Previously the annual Sopchoppy Worm Grunting Festival (April 14) marked the conclusion of “Wild About Wakulla Week” but this year it signals the start of a week filled with delightful outdoor activities that conclude with the “Wakulla Wildlife Festival” on April 20 & 21. Call 850-962-4138 if you need more details.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

Are you telling me that you have never “grunted” for earthworms? And you consider yourself “worldly.” For the uninformed “city folk” grunting for worms is an age old rural tradition that continues today. Rather than dig up the front yard for fish bait you summon the worms to you. By driving a wooden stake in the ground and rubbing a rasp-like device across the top of the stake. The “good vibrations” cause the earthworms to wiggle their way to the surface to join the party.

Not everyone is successful in this endeavor and that is why we have contests to discover the best. There are both adult and children’s competitions in the morning at the Sopchoppy Worm Grunting Festival in Sopchoppy. You can sign up at the table next to the historic Gopher/Frog & Alligator (GF&A) train depot. Live bluegrass music is played through much of the day and dozens of food and crafts booths line the main drag. The day concludes with the Worm Grunters Ball.

A tip…if you love plants get there early and visit the Iris Club tent.

WAKULLA SPRINGS

For a complete overview of “Wild about Wakulla” week activities see our Wakulla County pages.

Then on April 20-21 fabulous Wakulla Springs is the site of the annual Wakulla Wildlife Festival. There are activities both days and your $6 per vehicle donation to the “friends” gains you entrance. There are a significant number of events and great music both days and you can read all about them in our Complete Calendar of Events. Wakulla Springs features the largest submerged cave system in the United States and you will be able to “experience” a cave diver’s view of this wonder.

On the same weekend (April 21-22) the World Famous Panhandle Players will once again entertain in Franklin County (Dixie Theatre in Apalachicola). April’s play is “Sex Please, We’re Sixty” by Michael and Susan Parker and you can save a few dollars on a meal at a leading restaurant by going to the website www.panhandleplayers.com Show time is 7:30 pm on April 20 & 21 and at 3 pm on April 22.  Tickets are just $12 and you can make reservations by calling 670-5064 or 653-7688.  By the way the Panhandle Players will be presenting “Work, Play, Love”, a series of one-act plays, on Nov. 18-20.

Chillas Hall in Lanark Village will be hosting a “Beach Party/ Snowbird Farewell” dance party April 21, 7 pm –‘til. Sponsored by the Lanark Village Association the dance will feature Greg K & Krewe, a local entertainment group that drew full houses for recent New Years and Mardi Gras parties. The door donation is just $5 and participants usually bring food or snacks to share plus their own beverages.

The Ilse Newell Concert Series, which usually presents its shows at the historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola, moves its series outside on April 22 as it presents the “Nashville Dixieland Band” at Lafayette Park starting at 4 pm. This is “theatre in the round” as the beautiful waterfront park features a gazebo/band stand smack dab in the center of a fabulous setting. The park was originated in 1820.

You might want to rent a pair of roller skates for this particular weekend as there are even more special events on the docket. Besides the above noted activities the Apalachicola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce holds its annual “Antique & Classic Boat Show” April 20 & 21 and you are invited to take part in the annual “Florida Panhandle Lighthouse Challenge” April 21-22.

ANTIQUE & CLASSIC BOAT SHOW

The restored 1877 gaff-rigged schooner the Governor Stone will also be on display at the city dock in the center of town and the Apalachicola Riverkeepers will be giving guided tours of the river. Also, at the Cotton Warehouse there be an exhibit of model boats built by some of the finest model boat builders in the country, plus a marine art exhibit. At 6:00 pm there will be a dinner and lecture -reservations required. For information please call (850) 653-9419 or email   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Kindly note that many Forgotten Coast events have expanded from one day to two days. Some even longer! With close to 200 special events on the Forgotten Coast we urge you to “be aware” as you read our previews.)

March signals the start of the “season” on Florida’s Forgotten Coast and a whole litany of festivals and special events are planned to entertain our local residents and visitors. Ranging from the 30th edition of the Charity Chili Cookoff on St. George Island to the Camp Gordon Johnston Reunion activities in Carrabelle. From a Civil War Reanactment in Woodville to an Art Walk in Apalachicola.

There is also certainly plenty of musical entertainment in Apalachicola and even an organized tour of St. Vincent Island.

This month doesn’t actually kick off the summer “Family Swim Season” but so many families and students select the Forgotten Coast as their “Spring Break” destination that it now does a great imitation of summer. And from the speed at which copies of “Forgotten Coastline” flew off the racks the last couple of months it is obvious that the popularity of our “shoulder” months has increased dramatically. And Tourist Development Council statistics confirm what we know by instinct.

And just to add fuel to the ever increasing popularity of this region as an ecotourism “destination”, the phones have been ringing off their hooks at local Chamber offices ever since the most recent Sports Illustrated “Swimsuit Edition” was released. The Apalachicola/ St. George Island area was one of the majestic sites selected for their annual photo shoot. It has become obvious since the publication’s release that some folks actually look at the background in the pictures.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Kindly note that many Forgotten Coast events have expanded from one day to two days. Some even longer! Sometimes the reason for expanding is additional funding from the respective “Tourist Development Council.” (your bed tax dollars at work).  In many cases the “main event” is still happening on a single day (usually a Saturday) and “lighter” fare is offered on the other day. With close to 200 special events on the Forgotten Coast we urge you to “be aware” as you read our previews.)

Things used to be mighty “sleepy” during the Forgotten Coast’s “shoulder months.” Not so any more. February will be filled with all kinds of fun events for both residents and visitors. It wasn’t that long ago that you could count off the number of Forgotten Coast major festivals and special events using just YOUR fingers and toes. Now you need an abacus or even a computer. There is not only a significant event happening every month of the year, there is nearly one every weekend. Residents and visitors will be able to pick and choose among more than 150 fun activities.

Thanks in large part to the several tourist development councils in Forgotten Coast counties. Your bed tax dollars redistributed and put back to work in an effort to lure you back again. And to stay another day. Also, a reminder that the vast majority of our festivals are conducted by volunteers and you encouraged to says thanks and forgive minor mistakes. Plus many are for a good local cause. Ranging from volunteer fire departments to our four-legged friends.

LOTS OF (SEA)FOOD !

If you plan on attending the majority of 2012 festivals you are advised to also participate in an exercise program. Food (especially seafood) is the central theme of many of these celebrations. Ranging from oysters, stone crabs and mighty mullet to blue crabs, scallops and a combination all Florida Seafood.

And it isn’t just about celebrating fresh, local seafood. We’ve got gumbo in Mexico Beach and Lanark Village, pork in Eastpoint and Beacon Hill, ribs in Eastpoint, chili on St. George Island. A Chef’s Sampler in Apalach

The scallop Season opens July 1 and this day will also likely be the day selected by several communities to  stage their Independence Day celebrations. Port St Joe is definitely one of those cities. Fun events will also be held in Sopchoppy, St. George Island and Mexico Beach. Don’t know about Carrabelle yet.

The 8th Annual Mexico Beach Marina Offshore Classic is slated for July 27 and a run will likely be held in July on St. George.

OCTOBER

October has now evolved into one of the very busiest festival months of the year. Why? Because the hectic summer family tourist season has ended and the weather is absolutely beautiful. There will be a “Running for the Bay” Marathon” (TBA), Franklin County Oyster Festival (TBA), St. George Island Civic & Yacht Club events (TBA) plus a SGI BBQ and massive yard sale at the Methodist Church. Carrabelle’s Crooked River Lighthouse will host its annual Lantern Fest near the end of the month while Panacea hosts its annual Mighty Mullet Festival (TBA); Crawfordville is the site of the annual Woodstork Festival to benefit the Florida Wildlife Mammal Association (Oct. 6); Mexico Beach’s 14th Annual Art & Wine Fest will take place on the beach; the Blast on the Bay Songwriters Festival (Oct. 19-21) will take place in Port St Joe , Mexico Beach and Indian Pass;  The St, Marks Stone Crab Festival  is set for Oct. 20. Guess it is only appropriate that there is also a golf scramble and a Bow Wow Bash and Halloween activities.

NOVEMBER

The first weekend is always reserved for the annual Florida Seafood Festival in Battery Park in Apalachicola. It is now nearing its 50th Anniversary. The two-day affair will draw thousands from the throughout the Southeast. Friday night is free and Saturday is just $5 with name-brand entertainment included. The Apalachicola Bay Area Chamber hosts an Oyster Roast in Apalach on the Friday evening.

Both Apalachicola and Port St Joe have special events following Thanksgiving.

DECEMBER

Just about every community on Florida’s Forgotten Coast will host a special holiday event. Ranging from the Lighting of the Palms on St. George Island to a Golf Cart Parade in Shell Point. Panacea, Crawfordville, Sopchoppy, Eastpoint, Wewahitchka and Mexico Beach will have festivities. Biggest and Brightest of them all is the Holiday on the Harbor Celebration on Dec. 8 in Carrabelle. A lighted Boat parade, meal and fireworks are all part of the activities.

And then there is New Years!

As always, we urge readers to always double check on dates and times before traveling long distances for events on the Forgotten Coast. Things have been known to change! We attempt to keep you up-to-date on those changes both in Coastline (monthly) and on forgottencoastline.com (daily). Since we also check other Forgotten Coast related websites we can caution you about swearing by their dates for various events. Stuff Happens. Especially when you are attempting to compile a calendar a year in advance.
